Light in the Window is a private Residential Centre, which provides a homelike atmosphere for men to heal Mind, Body and Soul. Light in the Window recognizes that healing the trauma of childhood abuse and adult trauma is fundamental to healthy communities, families and individuals. Light in the Window is committed to offering professional services that meet the needs of male survivors of trauma and to encourage personal growth to enable men to actualize their full potential. The most recent national Canadian study 1984 , conducted by the Badgley Committee, estimates that about one in two females and one in three males have been victims of unwanted sexual acts. Four in five of these acts were committed against the person as a child or youth. We provide therapeutic residential services to male survivors of trauma. We provide a supportive, nurturing environment in which men are given the opportunity and encouragement to heal. We support men in their change process of moving from victim to survivor. We encourage self empowerment. We assist men in goal setting. Our staff are professionals who are compassionate and qualified to assist men in their healing process. We provide personalized programs and services. We work with local community services, to enhance services for our clients. Light in the Window is a Therapeutic Residential Centre established to provide services to male survivors of trauma. The need for such services came from the knowledge that there are very limited resources for male survivors of trauma and in some communities such services are non exsistant. Substance abuse is one coping strategy that many survivors of trauma utilize. Therefore, it is imperative to address substance abuse issues along side of survivor issues. Survivors are faced with difficult issues as a result of trauma. Some of the issues are low self esteem, self imposed social isolation, depression, anger, anxiety, boundary issues, and shame to name only a few.
